SIGHTSEEING IN FAMAGUSTA

February 08, 2016

As a student in Northern-Cyprus, i missed all the trips to the historic parts of the town. I always taught Famagusta was a boring place and that the city was full of crap, well today i couldn't disagree more. Famagusta is an historical place full of old legends and old artifacts. There is no denying that it can be very boring sometimes but it can also be fun. All those temple i usually see in the movies, all dem fighting arenas and patched house, i got to see them all today.

Today, i decided to explore my city because currently we are on holidays and there is so much time. I embarked on this journey without knowing what the outcome will be. Well i must say, It was worth it. I went touring around the city, i even went out of the cities to other cities because there was so much time. The day started out as a sunny one but if you've ever been to Northern-Cyprus during this period you would have learnt one or two things about the weather here. Famagusta has a very shitty weather, it can go from sunny - freezing in one minute.
I always hold my jacket because i learnt the hard way about the weather here. The journey started with the first stop at the Castle(Salamis road). It was very ideal to stop here first because it is not that far from the school and since we were going to go to other places, why not start from the beginning

I wont lie to you, the city is definitely an historical one. The way they maintain and preserve their culture is just unthinkable. Salamis was fun until we got to the next stop. The next stop was the St Barnabas Monastrey and Icon Museum. I am christian myself and i was really excited to see this place, being that the museum was named Barnabas, a Cypriot-Jew and a true follower of Christ. I wont deny the emotion people felt on getting there, including me. It was definitely worth seeing. People got on their knees and wept as they prayed.

The weather got worse as it went from freezing - raining. We left the museum and then we headed straight to St Nicholas Cathedral / Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque and then to Namık Kemal Prison and Museum. This places are definitely worth seeing especially the Kemal prison. I have never seen a prison like that, people back then must definitely have a curious mind to build something like that. There is no modern day technology, but i bet you, you can't escape from that prison. Just joking.

We left famagusta to Iskele, another good city but with few sightseeing places not until the weather got even worse and had to ruin it all. Well the adventure continues but i must not save this opportunity for another day. The best place i saw to day was the,"Salamis Ruins".
You remember how i told you about arenas in movies, well the salamis ruins was the place. This is the coolest place ever, i remember imagining myself even fighting in that arena with people hailing and shouting my name. The place was definitely worth my number. If you are a tourist, the salamis ruins is definitely a place to see.

P.S - some of the images were gotten online due to technical issues.
